SUMMARY

Every year, thousands in the kingdom of Talin flock to its capital twin cities, San-Er, where the palace hosts a set of games. For those confident enough in their ability to jump between bodies, competitors across San-Er fight to the death to win unimaginable riches.

Princess Calla Tuoleimi lurks in hiding. Five years ago, a massacre killed her parents and left the palace of Er empty…and she was the one who did it. Before King Kasa’s forces in San can catch her, she plans to finish the job and bring down the monarchy. Her reclusive uncle always greets the victor of the games, so if she wins, she finally gets her opportunity to kill him.

Enter Anton Makusa, an exiled aristocrat. His childhood love has lain in a coma since they were both ousted from the palace, and he’s deep in debt trying to keep her alive. Thankfully, he’s one of the best jumpers in the kingdom, flitting from body to body at will. His last chance at saving her is entering the games and winning.

Calla finds both an unexpected alliance with Anton and help from King Kasa’s adopted son, August, who wants to mend Talin’s ills. However, the three of them have very different goals, even as Calla and Anton’s partnership spirals into something all-consuming. Before the games close, Calla must decide what she’s playing for—her lover or her kingdom.

MY THOUGHTS

In "Immortal Longings," Chloe Gong weaves a vivid tale of magic, mystery, and the complexities of immortal life, employing the skillful threads of an imaginative and ambitious storyteller. The book takes you on an exhilarating journey through a world that is at once fantastical and eerily reflective of our own, showcasing Gong's ability to blend elements of fantasy, romance, and historical fiction into a narrative that captivates and provokes thought.

The protagonist's journey, which you follow with bated breath, is meticulously crafted with layers of depth and vulnerability, making her not just a character in a story but a person with whom you can relate and empathize. The supporting characters are equally well-developed, each contributing to the richness and emotional depth of the story. Gong's talent for character development shines as she skillfully navigates their complexities, desires, and fears.

The setting is another area where "Immortal Longings" stands out. Gong's vivid descriptions transport you to a world where the mundane and the magical coexist, creating a breathtaking and immersive backdrop. Her attention to detail, whether in the bustling streets of cities or the serene yet eerie realms of the immortals, adds a layer of authenticity to the story's fantastical elements.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is its plot. Full of twists and turns, it keeps you guessing until the very end. The pacing is masterful, with a balance of action, dialogue, and introspection that keeps the narrative moving forward without feeling rushed. However, it's the unexpected ending that truly sets this book apart. Without giving away any spoilers, it's safe to say that the conclusion of "Immortal Longings" was utterly unforeseen, leaving you in a state of surprise and contemplation long after turning the final page. Gong's ability to upend expectations and deliver a satisfying and thought-provoking finale is a testament to her storytelling prowess.

That said, while this is a remarkable read, it has minor flaws. The intricate plot can sometimes feel overwhelming, making it difficult to keep track of the various characters and their interwoven destinies. Additionally, while the blending of genres is generally seamless, there are moments where the transitions between historical fiction elements and fantastical realms feel jarring.

In conclusion, "Immortal Longings" by Chloe Gong is a compelling and beautifully written book that offers a unique blend of genres, richly developed characters, and an engaging and unexpected story. Despite its minor shortcomings, it is a testament to Gong's creative vision and storytelling mastery.
